I take huge divots out of the grass when swinging at a golf ball.?
I’m fairly new to golf. I’ve had some lessons and the instructor says that I actually have a good swing. However, I always seem to get a chunk of the grass (or mat at the driving range). This actually hurts when I do it. I’m not sure what I’m doing. When I actually hit the ball, I hit it well but it seems like the ground is taking a ton of power out of my swing. Are there any simple things that I can do to help with this?
You might be either dropping your head towards the ball in the downswing, or you aren’t transferring enough weight forward in the downswing.
If you’re dropping your spine, try making swings with a magazine tucked into the back of your pants. Maintain contact with the magazine throughout the whole swing.
if you aren’t transferring your weight (which would cause you to hit the ground first) through the shot, try setting up with a regular yellow sponge under your lead foot. Make your backswing. When you start to come down, make an effort to really squish the sponge. The idea is to finish with around 80-90% of your weight on the forward foot.
